June 03, 2002 - Blood on the motherboard

For whatever reason (games were too slow) I decided my computer needed an upgrade. And instead of just buying a new one, the guys at work (geeks) goaded me into buying new parts, and building my own (stupid idea).

So, I debated and finally ordered the parts. I ended up buying a new CPU, motherboard, memory, and a power supply. The last bit is crucial. It seems that my 3 year old power supply couldn't handle what the new CPU needed. Fair enough.

So I pulled apart the old computer, and put everything new in. Every time I do stuff like this, it seems that I cut myself on part of the computer. This was no exception. A little slice on my finger, and my motherboard tasted blood. I suspect that the bored and probably resentful worker who manufactures this stuff does that on purpose.

So I got everything together, and turned it on. And it worked. And the power supply worked. Whisper quiet it was not. It sounds like either (a) the world's largest hair dryer or (b) a harrier jet hovering 10 feet over my head. Either way, it's not a happy noise.

I made a cardboard shield to put over the back of the computer, and built some legs onto that to keep the air flowing. And man, let me tell you, this power supply does keep things cool. I could probably use this to cool the room the computer's in, let alone the computer. Or I could use it to power a small jet.

So I'm struggling to find a permanent solution to the noise issue. This will no doubt involve my nailing something. Good times.
