August 02, 2005 - Litterbox Shootout -- Contestant Two...

The long anticipated second litterbox arrived today, and has taken up a position opposite the Omega Paw in the cat room.

It nearly didn't work out that way tho... when I got home from work, I pulled in the driveway to find something that wasn't a litterbox waiting for me...

As you can tell, that's not a litterbox. It's a very large doghouse. Large enough that I could have built it and rented it out as a small apartment.

Obviously this wasn't what I expected. So I made the frantic call to PetSmart's 800 number, and they were actually pretty cool about the whole thing. I was instructed to take the doghouse to a store and they'd to the swap there, which is how it all went down.

An hour later, I had my brand spakin new Stylette Ultra litterbox on my floor and partially ripped open.

According to the box, this is clean, easy, and healthy.

Or as clean and healthy as containers chock full of cat feces can be.

This one was a snap to assemble, only because there was no assembly required. Just filled it with litter and plugged it in. And yes, it is circular. There's a good reason for that tho.

So here's the skinny on the circular nature of the box. When your cat enters the box, ,it detects the weight shift via sensors in the floor of the box. Think landmine and you're probably close. It waits a half hour for the cat to leave, and a giant metal rake comes out into the box, this is where the circular shape comes in, and the entire box spins and moves the cat waste onto the rake. The rake then lifts the waste up and moves it into a collection bin.

It's gone off once tonite, which I guess means the cats have accepted it.
