August 08, 2005 - Omega Paw Update 1
I had meant to post this entry Friday, but never got around to it...
It's been a little over a week now for the Omega Paw box, and I have to say, it's mostly done exactly what it's supposed to do. You roll it over, roll it back, and the cat muffins are deposited in the magical feces drawer.
How's it work, you might ask? Simple. The bottom of the unit is chopped into 2 areas, the main area (where the cat will go) about 3/4 in size, and the other area is cut off by a plastic grate and inaccessable to the cat. When you tilt it, the scooping litter goes thru the grate into the "holding area". The clumps of crap and urine hit the grate, bounce up into the lid, and slide down into the collection drawer.
It's just like pinball, but with cat turds!
Anyhow, here's the list of one week observations:
- You have to thump the bottom when it's turned "on it's head" a few times to get some clumps out (the ones that stick to the sides).
- I had a ton of litter escape thru one of the seams on the side. Duct tape fixed this problem. The build tolerances on this thing aren't exactly of the best quality.
- There are 2 sizes, a small and a large. I accidentally got the small, but 3 out of the 5 cats will happily use it.
- I guess it's the fact that I do tip and turn it daily in combination with the clumping litter, but the box doesn't smell at all. It's fantastic.
You may have read the bit where I said I do the tip and turn daily. I do. The small box is just too small to let it go for too long without some maintainence. I may pick up a litter locker (think of a diaper genie for cat crap) and simplify the whole morning cleanup procedure.
I know I promised a "Omega Paw in action video". It's coming. Really.
